Getting to Know Jesus

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” … 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”  John 1:43-46

Come and See

Philip wanted his friend Nathanael to know Jesus. But he also knew that Nathanael was not a person who trusted easily. Trying to describe Jesus would not work very well. Arguing with Nathanael would be even worse!

So Philip said something very simple and wise: “Come and see.” And he brought his friend to meet Jesus, so he could see for himself.

This is good for us too, when we are getting to know Jesus. We don’t need arguments. We can come and see for ourselves—by reading the Gospels and hearing what Jesus says and does. When we look at Jesus, we see God himself, who loves us so much he lay down his life to rescue us from the power of evil. We see God who has the power to rise from the dead—and give us life as well.

Thank you, dear Lord, for helping us see and know you. Amen.
