Recognition

On Friday, the 17th of November, the International Institute of St. Louis recognized individuals and organizations who have worked to support immigrants and refugees being resettled in our city. Organized by the Institute through its Anna E. Crosslin Center for Multicultural Excellence, this “UBUNTU Gala” saw individuals, organizations and supporters gather to acknowledge the collective work done to make St. Louis a more welcoming community for all. Ubuntu, a Swahili term meaning, “I am because we are,” captured the essence of collaboration among individuals and organizations serving those who are starting life anew in a new country.

As the evening program progressed the 2023 UBUNTU Multicultural Awards were handed out to Organizations that had supported and served alongside the International Institute during the Afghan refugee crisis of 2021-22. A total of five Refugee-Immigrant service organizations received the “Multiculturalism Advocate Award” from the International Institute President Arrey Obensen. Kindness Begins with Me, Little Angels Foundation, Oasis International, Welcome Neighbor STL and Christian Friends of New Americans (CFNA) were the recipients.

It was a special honor for CFNA to be recognized in this manner. This was made possible only by the generous outpouring of support received from numerous donors, organizations and foundations including especially, the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis and the Alliance of local Lutheran Congregations. Additionally, volunteers from numerous Lutheran congregations provided badly needed footwear and winter clothing just when they were needed most.

CFNA offers it sincere thanks to the International Institute for the honor they have bestowed on us and thanks too, to the many donors, advocates and supporters who helped make this possible.  We also praise God for enabling us to serve as Christ’s light to our new neighbors. (Mt. 5:16)
