Blessing the Newcomer

Every December, the Christmas Giveaway at the Peace Center provides an opportunity for new arrivals to go “shopping” for household/hygiene products such as winter clothing. This year, between December 17th and 19th, over 162 families from Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sudan, India, and other nations came to the Peace Center to receive basic necessities like laundry detergent, paper towels, shampoo, garbage bags, soap, and many more items. An additional 42 enthusiastic and energetic folks served by organizing, registering, distributing gifts, providing cookies, and helping with cleanup.

The annual Giveaway provides an opportunity to reach out to our friends who are in great need of basic items upon arrival to the U.S. Beyond providing these necessities, volunteers, and staff have a chance to share the love of Christ through follow-up conversations with attendees.

Homa, a volunteer from Afghanistan who has served with CFNA in the past, understands what many refugees are experiencing living in a new country. Upon seeing the Afghan women come through the door, Homa commented, “I see how enthusiastic and excited they are to be here and I enjoy seeing my old friends.”

A recently arrived St. Louis University student from Nepal, Tryphona, also shared her experience as a participant: “Since we are students with no income, this kind of event is quite helpful for us. This is a blessing for people like us.  We are really grateful for your kindness.  This is a way to show love and support to one another.  The more you give, the more you receive blessings. So may the Lord bless you and keep showing your love for others. God bless you all.”

The Giveaway Days would not be possible if not for the generous donations collected during the course of the year from local Lutheran congregations, businesses, nonprofits, individuals, and many other sources. CFNA is truly blessed by so many people who find joy in serving others with their time and talents.

Peace & Joy.
