Driver's Recognition Ceremony
/On Saturday, October 9, 2023, the students of the ESL and Driving class were invited to attend a Driver’s Recognition Ceremony for those who have received their driver’s license and/or driving permits during the past 12 months.
This driving program has been a success since it began, with approximately 400 students participating in our classes and behind-the-wheel instruction. They come from more than a dozen birth nations including Afghanistan, Haiti, India, Congo, and more. Currently, 105 have obtained their driver’s permits with 38 also holding their driver’s license. Presently, 10 more working on their driver’s permits in two-hour classes that meet three times a week. Students may attend as often as their schedules allow. All classes are free of charge.

Sixteen of the 30 people who participated in the Ceremony were recognized for their accomplishments. Each of them was invited to share a little bit about themselves. Several did and their sincere gratitude to CFNA was a common refrain among all of them. When asked what getting your driver’s license means to you, Mukesh Lnu, said “I can drive to work.” Another, Jagdish Pasad, replied, “It gives me the freedom to go where I want whenever I need to do so.”
As the facilitator of this ministry, it also means a lot to me. This new skill will not only provide them with independence, it also enables them to better serve the members of their family, and their respective communities as well. Those who received their driver’s license also receive a card together with the gift of a Bible verse to be hung from the visor or the rearview mirror of their vehicle.
After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed fellowship and a BBQ featuring halal chicken, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, and dessert. As an event activity, many became involved in making key chains.
A key purpose of the event was to provide a time when members of our community could interact and become acquainted with our New American friends. The event accomplished all of that and more.
